Guelph, ON – The Mustangs hit the road for their final regular season game of the season, ultimately falling 3-1 to Guelph.
Despite winning the first set, the Mustangs couldn’t close it out as the hosts took the next three. Janelle Albert led the way for Western with 14 kills and 1 ace.
The Mustangs came out firing early on, getting off to a 6-1 lead that they wouldn’t let go of for the rest of the set.
While the offense took full effect, the purple and white also put up strong defensive plays, and full efforts in which they were rewarded with the point after long rallies, one of which set up set-point.
Western eventually took the first set 25-17 off of a Guelph attacking error.
Rallying behind a Lauren Pastor serve, the Mustangs got off to a similar start to the first, this time with a score of 4-1. However, the Gryphons would make it more difficult to claim the set.
The hosts would tie things up at 7 and keep it within one for the next few points as well. Western would reclaim a small lead, with the score reading 16-13 at the technical timeout.
The Gryphons would climb back and take their first lead of the game off of a 4 point run, at 19-18. They would continue their points run to go up by 3 more, and would eventually take the second set 25-21.
Continuing where they left off, the hosts got off to an early 7-1 start in the third. Western would win 9 of the next 12 points to tie things up at 10, before eventually taking the lead at 14-13.
The purple and white would hold onto the lead until set-point, at which Guelph then managed to climb back and tie it at 24. They would eventually complete the comeback, winning 26-24.
Looking to close it out in 4, the Gryphons took an early lead against the Mustangs, and led 16-11 at the technical timeout. After the timeout, Guelph would take the next 5 points, putting them in the driver’s seat at 21-11. The hosts would win the game with a final 25-13 fourth set victory.
The Mustangs drop to 7-5 with the loss and now sit in fourth place in the OUA West, whereas the Gryphons improve to 2-7.
