Cougars lose three straight sets to drop opening playoff game

The University of Regina’s women’s volleyball team lost to the University of Alberta Pandas in three sets to open their Canada West playoff schedule.

The U SPORTS No. 2 ranked Pandas dominated right from the opening serve, taking the first two points before cruising to a 25-13 first set win. It was close early on at 7-5 for the Pandas before they went on a seven point run to put the set away.

The Cougars fared better on the second set, but again had no answers for Alberta’s attack. The Pandas recorded a .455 hitting percentage and had 13 kills as a team during the set to take it 25-16.

Alberta controlled the third set, taking the first five points. The Cougars could not climb out of the early hole and lost the match-clinching set 25-17.

Erin Corbett led the Panda attack, putting up a match-high 11 kills and a .474 hitting percentage. Setter Justine Kolody had a match-high 31 assists while Lauryn Tremblay had a match-high 10 digs.

Jessica Lerminiaux led the Cougars with seven kills. Cassadi Klapak had a team-high 18 assists and two kills from the setter position. Outside hitter Katie House led the team in digs, with nine.

The Cougars are back in action tomorrow to play the UBC Thunderbirds at 1:00 p.m. MT (2 p.m. Sask.) in Edmonton.

The Pandas will play the Winnipeg Wesmen at 6:00 p.m. MT.

If both Alberta and UBC win tomorrow, they will clinch the top two seeds in the pod and will move onto the next round of playoffs.
