MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS SHOW RESILIENCY IN SATURDAY’S WIN OVER TORONTO

Box Score The Nipissing Lakers men’s volleyball team has been on the wrong end of a few tough decisions lately, including Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Lakers looked to earn a weekend split as they took on Toronto for the second straight day, as the teams wrap up their two match, weekend set.

The team came up big, rebounding from a tough loss Friday night to defeat Toronto 3-1 Saturday to finish off the weekend in style.

In the first set, Nipissing started strong and controlled the early parts of the set, building up a 7-6 lead.

They maintained their lead throughout the game, leading 17-15 midway through and 20-17 late.

Toronto fought back, closing the gap in the final few points, but the Lakers managed to close things out, winning 25-21 to take the first game.

Nipissing jumped out to a lead once again, taking early control of the set.

They led 7-4, but the Blues quickly turned the tables and lead 12-9 near the midway point.

The Lakers stormed back to take a20-17 lead, but Toronto would not be denied, claiming the second set by a final of 25-21.

With the match tied 1-1, the Lakers took control in the third set.

They jumped out to an 11-6 lead and went on a run, outscoring Toronto 8-3 to go up 19-9.

Another run had Nipissing up 24-10 as they cruised to the 25-11 win and the 2-1 lead in the match.

With the Lakers looking to close out the match and the Blues looking to stay alive, both teams came out strong in the early stages of the fourth set.

Toronto held an early 12-11 lead on Nipissing.

Another run for the Lakers had the team hit 20, leading 20-15, on the verge of closing out the match in four games.

They made no mistake in finishing things off, claiming the set convincingly, 25-16 to take the match in four games.

Jacob Ringma led the Lakers offence with 18 kills, while Jackson Young added 12 in the victory.

Nipissing is back in action next weekend, closing out the regular season with a pair of matches against the Western Mustangs.

Match time is set for 2pm both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
