MARAUDERS FALL TO THE GRYPHONS IN AWAY GAME

The Marauders fell to the Gryphons in Guelph in a tough three set match on Sunday. It was a difficult match since the Marauders had swept the Gryphons in three sets on Friday but couldn’t put up the same performance on the road.

Sullie Sundara led the team in points, posting 13, while Jessie Nairn wasn’t far behind with 12. First year setter Chayse Victoria provided impressive support by making 27 out of the total 35 assists in the game. Looking solid on defense, 6’0″ libero Hayley Brookes made some big impacts with 13 digs.

The Marauders came into the first set strong, taking the early lead with six points while the Gryphons had only put up one, pushing Guelph to use a time out. Despite their strong start, the Marauders’ points started to slow, and Guelph took the lead 16-12 into the technical timeout. It came down to a tight first set, with Emma McKinnon posting six kills and Victoria with two service aces, but it wasn’t enough. Mac fought hard but the Gryphons looked strong in their home court, taking the set 25-22.

The second set was a nail biter, and the Marauders came in with determination. Intensity was high as the teams kept the competition close, matching each other with a score of 23-23 late in the set. They continued to match each other, all the way to 27-27. Sundara came through with seven kills and Victoria picked up another two service aces, but Guelph still managed to come out on top, resulting in a score of 29-27 for the home team.

Needing a win in the third set, the pressure was on for the Marauders. Fighting for it when it mattered most, Mac stepped up to keep the score tight. Victoria came in to support with 11 assists, but the Marauders still struggled to gain the lead. After a tough battle, Guelph took the set 25-19 to close out the game.

With a tough three set loss of 25-22, 29-27, and 25-19 on the road, Mac looks forward to returning to Burridge with their home crowd. Their next match is against the Windsor Lancers on Wednesday, Mar. 2nd at home. They move themselves to a record of 7-4 as playoff season approaches.
