Coming off from a convincing 3-0 victory over the Trent Excaliburs on Friday night, the York University Lions women’s volleyball team replicated that performance against the Guelph Gryphons, defeating them in straight sets Saturday afternoon at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
The Lions were led by Olivia Kim who tallied 15 kills and a game-high 17 points. Jessica Reynolds also put up a strong offensive outing with 14 kills, while Chiara Da Silva posted an outstanding 37 assists and seven digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- There was little separation between the two sides early. The GrYphons lead by as many as three in the first set, 11-8. The Lions rallied with three straight points to tie it at 11. Then, with the score 14-14, York went off for a 11-4 run to end the first set and win it 25-18.
- The Lions picked up right where they left off in the first, amassing a 12-4 lead early in the second. The Lions from there continued to find soft spots in the Gryphons defence, maintaining control throughout the second set to win it 25-14 and go up 2-0.
- The Lions didn’t let up in the third and took a commanding 14-4 lead. However, the Gryphons did not back down, as they made a valiant effort to claw their way back into the match, trimming the lead down to 22-20 and forcing a Lions timeout.
- Coming out of the timeout, the Grphons were looking to complete the comeback and force a fourth set, Kim and Brooklyn Parliament put an end to those hopes scoring the final three points for the Lions en route to a 25-23 third-set victory and a second consecutive straight-sets triumph.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will look to keep their winning streak alive and solidify their postseason berth against the TMU Bold on Saturday, Feb. 11. First serve is scheduled for 6 pm at Tait McKenzie Centre.
