The York University Lions women’s volleyball team was looking to bounce back from a season-opening loss in the second match of a weekend back-to-back at Tait McKenzie Centre against the reigning Quigley Cup champion Brock Badgers.
However, despite a gutsy performance from the home side, it was the visitors who, despite battling some adversity in the middle of the match, were able to secure their second consecutive victory over the Lions..
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After a tight, seesaw start to the opening set, it was the Badgers who quickly regained control, orchestrating a 15-7 surge to close out the set and secure a 25-15 set victory.
- In the second set, both teams began on equal footing, with neither side gaining an edge. Both teams made runs in the middle of the set, with the Lions holding leads of five and four. Despite a late push from Brock, the Lions sealed the set on an Amarai Endes kill to take the set by a score of 25-23.
- The third set saw the momentum head back toward Brock early, but the resilient Lions kept the game within reach, battling back from down 17-10 to eventually square the set at 20-20. York’s Ella Rohani stepped up with an ace and the combined efforts of Trubyuk and Madison Shanks levelled the score at 26 apiece. However, a decisive kill by Emma Baruchelli that ultimately granted the visitors the third set 28-26.
- The fourth set echoed the narrative of the first, as the Badgers once again led the way from the opening serve to the final kill by Meera Sayal to lock in a 25-19 set victory and win the match 3-1.
‘LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions will remain on home court in pursuit of their inaugural victory of the season as they take on the McMaster Marauders. The match is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11 at 6:00 pm.
