Koshinsky makes history, Huskies sweep Bisons

Emily Koshinski now holds the all-time record for most kills by a Saskatchewan Husky.

SASKATOON – It took five sets, but the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s team got it done to record the weekend sweep over the Trinity Western Spartans with a 3-2 win (25-21, 25-15, 11-25, 26-28, 15-11) at the Physical Activity Complex.

“It was definitely exciting to pull it out,” said Huskies head coach Mark Dodds. “In that fifth set, we made a couple changes and had some players step up and give us a chance to win.”

Regina product Hannah Toews was one of those players, according to Dodds.

“She came off the bench and had a couple of blocks that just turned the tide,” said Dodds. “She definitely played a big factor.”

Toews ended up recording the match-winning kill, one of three on the afternoon for the third-year outside hitter.

Alongside Toews, Mandi Fraser had a team-high 15 kills, as well as a game-high five blocks.

But perhaps the story of the afternoon was Emily Koshinsky, as she officially made history. Koshinsky tied the program record with 1028 career kills on Friday, doing so in fashion, as the historic moment came on match point. So she wasted little time making it official on Saturday afternoon and now holds the Huskies all-time record.

“She passed Candace Hueser, who graduated in 2014. So almost 10 years later we’ve got a new record. It’s definitely been a pleasure to sort of watch the process and see her go through a long career here and be pretty successful,” said Dodds.

Koshinsky, Jansen, Sask. product, finished her day with 10 kills.

On the Manitoba side, Keziah Hoeppner had a game-high 17 kills, while Katreena Bentley had a game-high 53 assists.

In the end, Saskatchewan had a .262 hitting percentage in comparison to Manitoba’s .187 clip, perhaps foreshadowing the match result.

The Huskies moved to 3-1 with the win, while Manitoba slid to 2-2.

Saskatchewan is back in action on Nov. 26, as they trek east for a pair of conference clashes against Winnipeg.

Meanwhile, Manitoba will also enjoy a bye week, before battling the Brandon Bobcats in a pair of conference clashes.
