Kory White named U SPORTS Player of the Year

CALGARY – Forever etching her name amongst the best to ever wear the Panda logo, fifth-year outside Kory White has been named the 2022 U SPORTS Player of the Year.

White, the 2020 University of Alberta Female Athlete of the Year, captured her second-straight Canada West Player of the Year award this spring. She now becomes the fifth Panda to win the Mary Lyons Award as the national player of the year, and first Panda since Meg Casault in 2017.

Tiff Dodds (2007), Jenny Cartmell (1999, 2000) and Mirka Pribylova (1996, 1997) are the other Pandas to win this award.

White led the 16-2 Pandas with 245 kills in 18 matches, finishing the season with a .320 attack percentage. The Pandas Volleyball Club product added 114 digs and 20 aces in 2021/22.

“Kory has been a great player for our team over her career with the Pandas on the court, and just as importantly, off the court,” said Pandas head coach Laurie Eisler. “She is one of the most driven, humble athletes I’ve ever coached who is completely committed to the development process. She is a great teammate, a leader by example and we are all thrilled for her that she is getting this much-deserved recognition.”

The Edmonton, Alta. native finished her varsity career as the Canada West All-time leader in kills (1,377), points (1,567.5), and second in kills per set (4.21).

White and the Pandas will look to earn the program’s 8th U SPORTS Championship this weekend in Calgary, as they open the 2022 national tournament on Friday with a quarter-final matchup against the Dalhousie Tigers.

All U SPORTS Championship games will be streamed live on CBCSports.ca
