SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s volleyball team improved to 12-2 on the season with a solid three-set win — (25-13, 25-17, 25-22) – over the visiting Regina Cougars (4-8) at the PAC on the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court on Saturday afternoon.
The east division-leading Huskies were dominant from the first serve – jumping out to an early 9-0 lead in the first set. A day after clinching a home playoff berth – the Huskies looked determined to cement their status as a force in Canada West. The Huskies high-powered offence was able to race out to a 25-13 first set victory.
A day after recording 15 kills, Emily Koshinsky followed up by tallying a game-leading 10 kills. Regina’s Jessica Lerminiaux also recorded 10 kills on the afternoon. Koshinksy moved into sixth place in Canada West career kills with 1230.
In the second set, the Huskies were able to continue their hot form. Despite being neck-and-neck with the Cougars heading into the technical timeout with a 16-15 lead, the Huskies were able to hold the Cougars to just two more points in the set. The set ended 25-17 for the Huskies off a Devyn Ethier kill.
The Huskies struggled in the third set – hitting a mere .026. Despite jumping out to a 7-3 lead over the Cougars in the third set, the Cougars were able to rally back and record five points unanswered. Ultimately, it would be the hosts that would prevail taking the third and deciding set 25-22 after a Koshinsky kill.
The Huskies will now enjoy a bye week before returning to the PAC on February 25 & 26 when they face the Winnipeg Wesmen. For the Cougars, they’ll host the Manitoba Bisons next week on February 18 and 19 in Regina. You can catch all the action on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
