Warriors come out firing following pause with back to back wins over Gryphons

It had been nearly three months since their last OUA match, and with just five practices under their belt heading into the restart, the Warriors grinded out two must-win matches over the Guelph Gryphons.

On Thursday night in Guelph, Waterloo mounted a comeback from a 1-2 deficit to claim a thrilling 5-setter over the Gryphons. The black and gold won the fourth 25-18 and then took the fifth by a slim 15-12 margin.

Sarah Glynn (Fredricton, NB/) did not miss a beat, leading all players with 16 kills while also adding a service ace and block. Jennifer Zhu (Oakville, ON/) and Mackenzie Vallee (Waterdown, ON/) were also on their games with eight kills each.

Defensively, Glynn and Vallee combined for 29 digs while senior Jenna Gravina (Burlington, ON/) collected 24. Katrine Eistrat (Toronto, ON/) was solid with 53 assists in the win while adding two aces.

On Saturday, Waterloo returned to the PAC to battle Guelph once again on Carl Totzke Court. It was again a very scrappy affair as Waterloo struggled at the service line but made up for it in their attack and defence to earn a 3-1 win over the visitors. Set scores were 20-25, 27-25, 25-20, 26-24.

Glynn led the Warriors in points again with 14.5 on eight kills, five blocks and four service aces while Vallee led her team in kills with 12. Karen Fan (Oakville, ON/) came to play as well with 11 kills and two blocks. At the net, Grace Crooks (Ottawa, ON/) was a wall for several key points, finishing with five blocks while Lauren Hebert (Burlington, ON/) was effective off the bench with three blocks while chipping in offensively with four kills.

Gravina led the way defensively with 28 digs while Eistrat was close to equaling her five set total from Thursday, with 45 assists.

The Warriors will look to keep their momentum going on the road next weekend as they travel to Windsor to take on the Lancers on Saturday followed by a trip to Hamilton to take on McMaster. Both matches are scheduled for 2pm and can be seen live on OUA.tv.
