Huskies Fall in Regular Season Finale, Move On To Playoffs

SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies and Winnipeg Wesmen’s men’s volleyball teams went toe-to-toe on Saturday evening. Ultimately, it was the Wesmen that prevailed over the host Huskies in four sets (28-30, 25-17, 22-25, 26-28).

The Huskies honoured their graduating fifth-years Matthew Primrose, Luke Wandzura, Jeff Erickson, and Nathan Seidel during their final regular season game at the PAC.

Huskies Dylan Mortensen had a game-high 19 kills, with Levi Olson coming behind him with 13 kills. Skyler Varga was following right behind with 12 kills and had a game-high 4 aces.

Saskatchewan battled it out in the first set to extend the game, but Winnipeg ultimately won 30-28. In the first set, Wesmen’s Daniel Thiessen gathered a total of 4 kills, while finishing the match with 18 kills.

The Huskies bounced back to take the second set 25-27 despite being down early by three. Skylar Varga crushed out multiple aces to finish the second set quickly.

From there on, the Wesmen took the third (25-22) and fourth (28-26) sets. The third set was filled with multiple attack errors from both teams from the start to the end of the set. The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair as both teams traded blows. However, it was the Wesmen who yet again took the win. Wesmen’s Eric Dornez closed the game out with a block to finish the night.

The Saskatchewan Huskies finished third in the East Division, and will go to Alberta at to play in Pool B. The Winnipeg Wesmen finished at the top of the East Division and will host Pool A. The first week of playoffs will commence March 3rd and 4th. You can catch all the action on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
