BRANDON, Man. – The Canada West east division standings were tight entering Saturday’s contest between the Huskies and Bobcats, and things got even more interesting with Saskatchewan’s 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 26-24) win.
The Huskies improve to 3-5 with the weekend sweep, and now enter the holiday break a lot closer to the Manitoba teams that were atop the division standings, including Brandon who now sits at 4-4.
The Huskies’ magic from the service line on Friday did not continue in the first set on Saturday, as the dogs had one ace to go with seven errors from the line.
The duo of Dylan Mortensen and Skylar Varga got hot in the second, combining for 10 kills on 14 swings in the frame.
Brandon started the third with five straight points, but it didn’t last long as Varga went on a serving run before the Huskies took the lead at 10-9. The teams exchanged points before a 5-1 run late ended it for the Huskies.
The fourth set was neck and neck until Brandon’s Joao Cunha had to sub out at 24-24, then Levi Olson ended it with consecutive aces.
The secret about Varga is officially out, as the rookie had a night for himself, finishing with 15 kills and a .429 attack efficiency.
Mortensen led all players with 20 kills, while Matthew Primrose also had a match-high with 11 digs.
Brandon was led by Max Brook’s team-high 14 kills. Jake Fleming had a match-high 44 assists.
The two teams now enter the December break before meeting again to resume the second half of the season on January 14 in Saskatoon.
