Wilson Challenge Trophy
Male Athlete of the Year
Isaac Heslinga – Golden Bears Volleyball
Over the last two plus decades, Golden Bears Volleyball players have dominated the Wilson Challenge Trophy, and 2023/24 is no different. After one of the most dominant seasons in Bears program history, third-year outside hitter Isaac Heslinga was named the Male Athlete of the Year.
Heslinga is the 9th Bears Volleyball athlete to win the award since 1997, the most of any sport during that span. In total, Heslinga is the 11th Bears VB player to win the Wilson Challenge Trophy, and second-straight after Jordan Canham earned the honour in 2022/23.
A former Canadian National Junior team member, Heslinga powered the Golden Bears to their 15th Canada West Championship win, and record-tying 10th U SPORTS title. He was named both the conference and national Player of the Year, as well as the U SPORTS Championship MVP.

His kill total is the third most ever for a Bear in a single season, while his 4.14 kills per set is the highest by an Alberta athlete since the turn of the century. Only one Bear has ever recorded more than Heslinga’s 446.5 points in a single season.
