CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team (12-10) will be playing host to the Manitoba Bisons (13-9) for the last regular season weekend at the Jack Simpson Gym this weekend, starting Friday.
The Friday matchup is set for 7:45 p.m. while Saturday’s first serve is at 5 p.m.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. VIBE CHECK – The Dinos took home a win and a tough five-set loss last weekend against the Saskatchewan Huskies. The Bisons, on the other hand, were swept by the Fraser Valley Cascades, with one of the matches being a five-setter where the Cascades made a thrilling comeback. Both teams sit around the middle of the pack in the Canada West standings, with Manitoba in sixth and Calgary right behind in seventh heading into the weekend.
2. WHO NEEDS A SHOVEL? – Manitoba’s Julia Arnold ranks third in the country in total digs, collecting an impressive 333 so far this season and having a 4.27 average per set. However, the Dinos as a team rank seventh in the country in digs, notching 1193 as a collective.
3. A BRICK WALL – Calgary’s Mya Sheridan ranks third in the country for blocks per set, having a 1.09 average per set. Her defensive efforts add to her team’s total of 185 blocks on the year, which ranks Calgary fourth in the country.
4. KILLER INSTINCT – Manitoba’s Raya Surinx ranks fourth in the Canada West conference in kills, racking up 269 for a 3.45 average per set. She also ranks third in the conference in serving aces, making 43 and having a 0.55 average per set. These stats add to her ranking third in the conference for points, collecting 323.5. But, overall, Calgary ranks fifth in the country for kills made, notching a combined 958.
5. BECOMING FOSSILS – Anna Wittenberg, Stella Rains, and Milana Zivak will be honoured as the graduating seniors this weekend. Rains has had quite the season, making a career-high 27 kills, 524 assists, 25 serving aces, and 129 digs.
