Gryphon Weekend Wrap (Oct. 27-29, 2023)

GUELPH, Ont. – A total of 12 Gryphon varsity teams are featured in the latest edition of the ‘Gryphon Weekend Wrap’ for the period covering October 27 to 29, 2023.
 


Highlighting the Gryphon varsity playoff action this past weekend was the Gryphons men’s and women’s cross country teams who saw U of G runners win both races at the 2023 OUA Championships. The men’s team also captured their 31st conference title while the women took home a silver medal in the team standings. In other playoff action the Gryphons men’s lacrosse team defeated the McMaster Marauders 8-4 in the Baggataway Cup Play-In Game to advance to the CUFLA Championships next weekend in Peterborough. At the OUA Rowing Championships the Gryphons performance was highlighted by the men’s lightweight 4+ finishing third to capture the lone Gryphon medal of the day. The men’s rowing team would go on to finish 6th and the women 8th in the final team standings. The U of women’s soccer team saw another memorable 2023 season come to an end Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, falling to the McMaster Marauders 2-1 in the OUA quarterfinals. In Kingston, two Gryphon teams competed in conference championships with the Gryphons women’s rugby team taking on the Queen’s Gaels in the OUA final, and the women’s lacrosse team playing in the OUA championship tournament. The women’s rugby team fell to the Gaels to capture a 2nd-place finish in the conference and will now head to nationals next week, while the women’s lacrosse team completed their championship tournament with a 6th-place finish. 

The Gryphons men’s and women’s hockey teams each played a pair of games on the road, with the men dropping two in Montreal to Concordia and McGill while the women split games against TMU and Waterloo. On the court, the U of G volleyball teams wrapped up their 2023-24 preseason schedules and will now shift their focus to their regular season openers on November 3 (men) and November 10, 2023 (women). 

In Hamilton on Sunday the Gryphon wrestling team opened up their 2023-24 season at the McMaster Invitational. On the men’s side the Gryphons were led by second year Tristan Cako who finished first in thr 57kg class, defeating teammate and rookie Cooper Feke in the finals. The women’s team was highlighted by a trio of third-place finishes from Jayden Sparks (55kg), Lauren Chew (65kg), and rookie Brooklyn Glasgow (53kg). Internationally, the Gryphons wrestling team was represented by 2022-23 U SPORTS Bronze Medalist Kelyn Young at the 2023 U23 World Wrestling Championships in Tirana, Albania, with the Brampton native finishing the tournament 16th in the women’s 50kg weight class.
