Griffins take down WolfPack in three

KAMLOOPS – The host MacEwan Griffins held off a third set push to defeat the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women’s volleyball team by a score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-23) in Edmonton.

The Griffins hit .330 per cent as a team while holding the ‘Pack to a mark .071 en route to earning their fourth win of the season. Now holding a record of 7-13, the WolfPack will need some big results throughout the remaining two weekends of action to earn a Canada West playoff spot.

It was a balanced effort for the ‘Pack, with 13 different players hitting the floor. Erin Mutch and Brooklyn Olfert recorded ten kills apiece while rookie Addison Witkowski had a strong outing. The product of Medicine Hat tallied four kills, three service aces and lone block of the game for TRU. Libby Meldrum and Hadley Schmidt split the game at setter, ending the night with 16 and 12 assists respectively.

After the Griffins took the first two sets by identical scores of 25-19, the WolfPack rallied in the third. Meldrum capped off a five-point TRU run with a service ace to send the visitors up 17-10. A Witkowski kill made the score 20-15 before the Griffins ripped off five of the next six points to cut TRU’s lead to one. MacEwan was able to ride that momentum and won the final three points of the set to claim victory.

Next up for the ‘Pack is a trip to Langley where they will face the always dangerous Trinity Western Spartans, February 10-11.
