CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos women’s volleyball team played late into Saturday evening in a memorable five-setter that went the other way as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies found a way down the stretch for the 3-2 win to earn the weekend split inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
Things were tight seemingly the whole night as the Huskies finished the night with just a four-point edge in the overall point tally in the close five setter, winning 27-29, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11.
The two teams finish the weekend both with 8-12 records and tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in Canada West with four games left to go.
The Dinos Sophie Reed had an impressive game offensive and defensively as she managed 16 kills, four aces, four blocks and 14 digs throughout the night. Huskies Olivia Mattern and Keely Anderson tied their kills at 10.
Huskies setter Sophia Magus managed a hand on almost all balls for them this game with 41 assists. Evelyn Kath and Anya Fehr had 27 and 17 respectively.
The Huskies started this game off strong in set one as they pulled ahead to an eight-point lead over the Dinos. The Dinos persevered within the set and came back for a 29-27 set score with 14 kills, two blocks and two aces. Dominique Desautels and Daisy Olsen shined with their kills as Olsen finished off the set with a sharp line kill.
The Dinos came into set two with momentum as they managed the upper hand on the Huskies with a six-point lead early on. The Huskies would catch up in the late teens and pull ahead to take set two 25-23.
Set three saw an even match between the two teams but in the end, the Huskies would pull forward to make it 2-1 with a set score of 25-21.
The Dinos weren’t finished yet as set four saw an impressive 12 kills, three aces, and four blocks. They maintained their energy as the game fell late into the night but Olsen would finish off the set 25-21 with a strong middle swing.
The fifth and final set of this game was matched at the start but the Huskies pulled forward near the halfway mark. Errors on the Dinos side would be their true opponent as the two teams battled till the end for a Huskies 15-11 set score.
The Dinos will travel to Winnipeg next weekend to face off against the Wesmen on February 9th and 10th.
The Huskies will welcome the UBC Thunderbirds for their last home games of the regular season at the Physical Activity Complex on February 9th and 10th.
