Bold secure first win of the season against Lancers

The TMU Bold women’s volleyball team is back on the court for a double-header weekend facing the Windsor Lancers.

The Bold walked into today’s match looking for their first win of the season, and they did so in four sets.

Sisters Lauren and Brittany Veltman led the Bold to a 25-20 first set victory. Lauren led the Bold with game-highs of 18 kills and 16 digs

Head coach Dustin Reid is happy to have Lauren Veltman back on the team. “She’s an incredible competitor, and shows her teammates it’s okay to take risks if your desire is to be a winner.”

Into the second set, the Bold were looking to bring it more than they did in the first, relying on libero Mary Rioflorido to receive the Lancer’s sharp serves.

The Lancers could see the set slipping from them as the Bold racked up a total of 51 kills, but a quick comeback gave Windsor the upper hand of 23-25.

Going into the third set, the Bold had to do anything to win. The Bold held a hit percentage of 0.89% while the Lancers had a 0.24%.

Late reaction in the third made it easy for the Bold to take the lead, and a big kill from Lauren Veltman made it her 15th of the game.

“Coming back was pretty easy, I feel like me and the team are gelling really well,” added Veltman.

The Bold hoped to keep this set intact, and they did leading with ten points, and they headed into the 4th set with a 2-1 lead.

Outside hitter Scarlett Gingera shut down the Lancers quickly, recording 11 kills.

Gingera picked it up in the second set and onwards helping the Bold rack up the points. “I think my mindset was just to go back to the basics and be aggressive,” said Gingera.

In the final set, the Bold had their eye on the prize, capturing the first win of the weekend. Ashley Ditchfield continued to impress with a 5.0 of total blocks.

First-year Kaiya Krahn got her first taste of the court and achieved her first attack of the season.

The Bold are back at home court tomorrow at 1 p.m. to face the Lancers once again, hoping for a second win.
