Bisons Volleyball Caps First Half of Season at IGAC

The Manitoba Bisons men’s and women’s teams are looking to close out 2021 on a high note.

The Manitoba Bisons men’s and women’s volleyball team take to the court at Investors Group Athletic Centre this weekend, as the first half of the university sports season comes to a close. The Bisons women will host the Regina Cougars, opening the action Friday evening at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 5 p.m., while the men take on the Winnipeg Wesmen, with match times scheduled for 7:45 p.m. on Friday and 6:45 p.m. on Saturday.

As with all Bisons regular season home games, UM students get in for free but must claim mobile tickets for entry. Other game day protocols will be in place, with fans able to purchase their tickets ahead of time on Showpass.

The Bisons men are returning home after an up-and-down weekend in Brandon, which ended on a high note as they upset the No. 10 team in the nation in a marathon five set match. For the 3-3 Bisons, the story of the season has started with Ben Carleton, who sits second in the Canada West conference with 84 total kills. The only man he looks up at is on the opposite side this weekend, as Winnipeg’s Dylan Thiessen has totalled 107 and will be a heavy hand for Manitoba’s block to try and stop.

For the women, two losses to the Bobcats has them 2-4 on the year, but there’s an opportunity to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot as they take on the 1-3 Cougars. The young Bisons have seen different players be the hero in different matches. In the squad’s latest match, a five-set heartbreaker, it was second-year Light Uchechukwu who was the star — tallying 24 kills, ten more than any other player in the match.

Following the holiday break, Bisons sports return to campus with men’s hockey on January 14 and 15, while basketball hosts Winnipeg at IGAC on January 15.
