VANCOUVER – One week removed from their first road trip of the season, the UBC Thunderbirds (4-0) return to the friendly confines of War Memorial Gym this weekend for a pair of weekend matchups with the MacEwan Griffins (0-4).
Doug Reimer‘s team is off to a strong start in 2022-23 having outscored their first two opponents (UFV and Brandon) by a margin of 12 sets to 1. Veteran Elise Petit has led the way with 56 points, but the ‘Birds head coach is pleased with his team’s collective depth both offensive and defensively.
“We are pleased with our consistency of play so far. We had so many new pieces a year ago and now we’re generally a little more cohesive,” said Doug Reimer. “We’ve had some injuries early on, so the depth that we’ve shown so far has been big for us. That is definitely a big positive that we saw in the preseason and the first two weeks of league play.”
Maintaining that consistency will be the primary focus for the blue and gold as they prepare to host a MacEwan squad looking to snap an 0-4 skid to start their season.
Doug Reimer adds, “Coming off a road trip, but then head into an eventual bye week, the hope is that we can come out crisp this weekend and maintain a solid performance each night. MacEwan is a younger team but every team brings something a little bit different to the table, so in preparing for that, our focus is going to be to try and take away the best things that they do without losing track of what we want to accomplish.”
The first of the Friday-Saturday double-header between UBC and GMU begins tomorrow night at 6:00 pm from War Memorial Gym. Tickets for all matches this weekend can found here. All games can also be viewed live on Canada West TV.
