Bhatti, Hildebrand named January’s best

Plenty of impact performances were made in the month of January by Bobcat student-athletes but two have been selected as the Smitty’s Sportsline Loung Athletes of the Month.

Camryn Hildebrand and Sultan Haider Bhatti were announced as the athletes of the month Wednesday afternoon.

Camryn Hildebrand has continued to find new levels to her game, as the fourth-year middle has proven to be a valuable asset for the Bobcats. The Brandon product is BU’s Female Athlete of the Month for January following outstanding performances that have her leading the team in aces, sit second in blocks, and third in kills. Hildebrand’s outstanding play has come while growing more and more confident in her game, being a leader on the court and off, and demonstrating a ‘team-first’ attitude.

Hildebrand and the Bobcats play the final home games of the season this weekend against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack before concluding the season on the road against the UBC Thunderbirds.

Friday’s match is scheduled for 6 p.m. while first serve in Friday’s match is set for 5 p.m. Hildebrand, along with team mates Kallie Ball and Brianne Stott, will be recognized as graduating seniors immediately following Saturday’s match.

Sultan Haider Bhatti has been on an absolute tear so far this season but is looking to continue his impressive play into the coming weeks. The third-year combo guard/forward has been one of the best in Canada West, ranking among conference leaders in nearly every stat category. He leads the conference in rebounding, sits second in steals, fifth in scoring, second in 3-pointers, and second in minutes per game. Best of all, his play has led the Bobcats to a prime spot for the post-season tournament which gets underway Feb. 21. Bhatti’s impressive play included career highs in points (32) and rebounds (19) against the MacEwan Griffins on January 13.

Bhatti and the Bobcats will now have a two-week bye before playing in the Canada West tournament that starts Feb. 21 at the University of Manitoba.

Brandon’s opponent will be determined following the final conference competition on Feb. 14-15.
