(WOLFVILLE, NS) The Acadia Axewomen scored a 3-1 victory over the UNB REDS on Saturday afternoon in Wolfville.

The opening two sets went to Acadia, making it five straight to start the weekend against UNB, but the REDS weren’t willing to concede a three-set sweep, like on Friday, and battled back to take the fourth set 25-23.

Despite extending the match, UNB ultimately fell 25-20 in the fourth set.

Alexia Lemay-Evans (Azilda, ON) led the home team with a match-high 12 kills and 13.5 points. Wesley-Ann Bailey (Ottawa, ON) had a match-high three solo blocks and four block assists for the Axewomen, which was closely matched by UNB’s Isla Olesen (Calgary, AB) who finished with three solo blocks and two block assists.

UNB was led by Meghan Vaags (Abbotsford, BC), who finished with 10 kills, two solo blocks and two block assists).

Eve Collombin (Victoria, BC) tied her career high dig total with 21. She also had four kills.

Acadia’s offence was run through Charlotte Dean (Mississauga, ON), who finished with 32 assists, while Catherine Burns (Fredericton, NB) had 27 assists for the REDS.

The AUS and U SPORTS leading liberos had another outstanding showing as Acadia’s Rebecca Dorsey (Toronto, ON) had 28 digs in the match. UNB’s Jenna Adams (Truro, NS) finished with 20. Heading into the final week of conference action, Adams leads the country with 5.40 digs per set, while Dorsey is second with 4.70.

UNB finishes their regular season on February 16 and 17 against Moncton, while Acadia wraps up their year with matches against Dalhousie on February 15 and 17.

Acadia sits atop the Atlantic University Sport standings with a 14-4 record while UNB, now 10-8, is tied for third with Dalhousie. The Tigers do have a game in hand on the REDS.
