Huskies top the AUS standings after weekend sweep over Axewomen

WOLFVILLE, NS – The Saint Mary’s Huskies stand alone atop the Atlantic University Sport Women’s Volleyball standings after defeating the Acadia Axewomen in four sets on Sunday afternoon in Wolfville, NS.

Acadia opened the match with a decisive 25-13 first set with the Huskies having the answer with a 25-19 win in the second.

The third set was much closer, but Saint Mary’s ultimately took it 25-23. They finished the match with a 25-19 fourth set.

Megan Bruhm (Hubley, NS) and Emilia Mikanovich (Minsk, Belarus) led the Huskies offence, which was run through Taylor Lougheed (Calgary, AB) who finished with 31 assists. Mikanovich had a team-high 11 kills and 12 points, while Bruhm had eight kills, two aces and a block.

For Acadia it was Alexia Lemay-Evans (Azilda, ON) who led the match with 13 kills and 15 points. Their player of the game, Jenna Lake (Conception Bay South, NL), finished with 11 kills and two aces for 13 points.

Defensively at the net it was Erica Fisher (Middle Stewiacke, NS) who had a match-high three blocks and two block assists. On the floor, Rebecca Dorsey (Toronto, ON) had a match-high 19 digs for the Axewomen, with Bruhm, Lougheed, and Olivia Bell (Lahave, NS) all finishing with 13 digs apiece for Saint Mary’s.

The Huskies fifth straight win improves their record to 9-3 on the season. They’ll be on the road to Fredericton next weekend for a pair of matches against the UNB REDS (7-5) on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m., before returning to the Homburg Centre on Jan. 26 to host the Moncton Aigles Bleues.

The Axewomen loss drops their record to 8-4 on the campaign. They’ll be back on the road next weekend visiting the Moncton Aigles Bleues (5-7) on Saturday and Sunday, with both matches scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
