116 YORK STUDENT-ATHLETES ACHIEVE U SPORTS ACADEMIC ALL-CANADIAN STATUS FOR 2022-23

Last Wednesday, Jan. 24, York University Athletics & Recreation held its annual academic awards banquet.

In returning to the event’s original format, the ceremony highlighted the academic achievements of our student-athletes, honouring those who attained U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian status, during the 2022-23 academic year.

To be nominated to receive a U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian Award, the nominee or recipient must be a U SPORTS-eligible student-athlete at the time of nomination or receipt of award and be free of any “major” disciplinary sanctions or suspensions from their university, Regional Association Conference Office or U SPORTS, in the academic year in question. Further, the athlete must have been enrolled as a student-athlete, as determined by their institution (minimum 18 credit hours as per U SPORTS regulations). Additionally, the athlete must have received a September to August 31 grade point average, which takes into consideration every course the athlete was registered in during that period, equivalent to an A- (or 80%) or better. Finally, the athlete must also have been a member of one or more of the institution’s U SPORTS varsity teams and have used a year of eligibility for that sport.

Student-athletes were grouped by year of receipt, from first time to fifth. In all, 116 York Lions varsity student-athletes earned the Academic All-Canadian distinction during the last academic year, including 75 first-time recipients. Additionally, there were 19 second-time winners, 14 third-time honourees, seven four-time recipients and one five-time Academic All-Canadian.

Manager, Varsity Athletics – Student Support and Administration Mandy McCurdy says this accomplishment is not an easy one to achieve, and should be celebrated.

“The Academic All-Canadian distinction recognizes those varsity student athletes that have achieved outstanding academic success while balancing their high performance sport commitments,” said McCurdy. “These two responsibilities require a tremendous amount of dedication and ability, and we are very proud to showcase these individuals and their success.”
