GUELPH, Ont. – Friday night (Oct. 25) at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, the Gryphons women’s volleyball team officially got their 2024-25 OUA regular season underway with a home matchup versus the Waterloo Warriors. The Warriors would spoil the Gryphons home opener, winning the match in straight sets (21-25, 21-25 & 16-25). The Gryphons were forced to play the majority of the match without the services of their OUA First Team All-Star setter, Alexa Shields, who was forced to leave the game in the first set after suffering a lower body injury. Despite losing their standout, fourth-year setter, the Gryphons remained competitive, with rookie outside hitter, Sloane Fortin (Burlington, ON), impressing in her OUA debut with a team-high 11 points (8 kills, 7 digs, 2 solo blocks and 2 assisted blocks. Second-year setter, Sophie Sommerfeldt, chipped in nicely in the absence of Alexa Shields, with the human kinetics major from Whitby adding 21 assists on the night. But the visiting Warriors were able to come out on top of back-to-back tightly-contested sets, before taking the 3rd set 25-16 to seal the win.
The Gryphons (0-1) and Warriors (1-0) will square off once again on Saturday night (Oct. 26) in Guelph, with game time set for 6pm at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
