Hosting the York Lions in the second of their weekend series, the Lakers were looking for the sweep.
Unfortunately, Nipissing wasn’t able to duplicate the results and came up short, losing 3-0 to the Lions – Nipissing’s first loss of the season.
The Lions came out strong in the opening set, taking control early and leading for the entire game, en route to the win.
They held a 9-4 advantage, pushed their lead to 16-11 at the technical timeout and managed to stay a handful of points ahead of Nipissing throughout the set.
Up 20-15 late, the Lions outscored Nipissing 5-3 down the stretch to pick up the win and go ahead 1-0 in the match.
In the second set, the teams traded points early on and were even, 6-6, after the first 12 points, but it was Nipissing taking control shortly after.
The Lakers wrestled control away from York and led 13-10 and stay ahead of the Lions at the technical timeout, up 16-13.
York caught fire late, outscoring Nipissing 7-2 to hit the 20-point mark and grabbed the lead.
Despite a late push from the Lakers, who actually held a 21-20 lead, the Lions were able to take the set and go up 2-0 in the match.
The final score of the second game was 25-22 in favour of York.
Much like the first set, the Lions were able to get the jump on Nipissing, leading 8-3 in the early part of the game.
At the technical timeout in the third and what turned out to be, the final set, the Lakers trailed 16-12.
York outscored Nipissing 4-1 from there, going ahead 20-13 before putting the set and match away, thanks to a 25-15 win in the third.
Despite the 3-0 loss Saturday, the Lakers end the weekend with a 3-1 record.
The Lakers are back in action next weekend, hosting the Ryerson Rams at the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre Friday night and Saturday afternoon.
