Box Score Coming off a weekend split on the road, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team jumped on homecourt for the first time this season.
They hosted the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the first of two matchups this weekend.
Despite a bit of a slow start, the Lakers picked up their second win of the season, defeating Lakehead 3-1 Friday night.
In the opening set, the Lakers grabbed an early lead, up 10-9.
They built on that advantage, going ahead 16-13 thanks to outscoring the T’Wolves 6-4 midway through the first set.
Unfortunately, Lakehead fought back and stormed ahead late, earning a 25-23 win to go up 1-0.
The Lakers bounced back nicely in the second set, tidying up their play and evening up the match.
After the score was tied 10-10, the Lakers jumped out in front 18-16 before pulling away, then hanging on late to pick up the 25-22 win to grab the set.
In the third, the Lakers kept the momentum rolling, starting off strong once again.
They led 11-10 early and 16-11 midway through the set.
Nipissing caught fire from there, outscoring Lakehead 5-1 to catapult themselves to a 21-12 lead late in the third set, looking for the lead in the match.
The Lakers cruised to a 25-16 win in the third set, giving themselves the lead in the match, as they looked to close things out in four sets.
In the fourth, the Lakers took care of business to close things out.
They grabbed a 15-10 lead midway through the set, building up a healthy cushion before they headed to the final stages of the set leading 22-20.
They kept their lead, earning a 25-22 victory in the fourth to close out the match.
Leading the Lakers offensively was Oceane Raymond who posted 19 kills and 24 points, Paige Owen had 11 kills, Kristine Ledger had 9 kills and 10.5 points and Amy Connelly added 9 kills and 10 points in the win.
The same teams are back at it Saturday afternoon, hitting the court at 4pm at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
