WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS SHOW HEART IN COMEBACK WIN

After a tough schedule to start the season saw the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team face two nationally ranked teams on the road, they finally had a chance to play on their home court.

The Lakers hosted the Lakehead Thunderwolves Friday night, in the first of two matches this weekend in North Bay.

It wasn’t easy, but the Lakers found a way to claim win number one, outlasting Lakehead 3-2 in five thrilling sets.

In an exciting opening set, the Lakers and Thunderwolves traded runs and both had control of the game throughout.

After going up 18-17, the Thunderwolves tied the game 21-21 before the Lakers managed to grab the final few points, coming away with the 25-23 win to go up 1-0.

In the second set, Lakehead jumped out to a slight 10-7 lead early on.

Lakehead managed to stay ahead throughout the second set, eventually closing things out and winning 25-22 to even up the match.

In the third, Lakehead continued to gain momentum, jumping out to an early 8-6 lead, extending it to 16-12 midway through the game.

After trailing 20-18, the Lakers came up short, losing 25-20 and going down 2-1 in the match.

Refusing to give in, the Lakers fought back in the fourth set.

After trailing very early, the Lakers stormed back to grab a 9-8 lead and wouldn’t surrender the lead after that.

They added to their advantage, going up 16-13 and then 22-17.

From there, they secured the win, claiming the fourth set 25-19 to send the match to a fifth and deciding game.

In the fifth, it wasn’t the start the Lakers were looking for, as they trailed 3-2 early and 8-7 at the halfway point.

Down 11-9, Nipissing outscored Lakehead 6-3 down the stretch to complete the comeback and earn their first victory of the season.

Anna Marie Horvat had a huge match, posting 18 kills, while Oceane Raymond-Leduc added 12 in the Lakers win.

The teams are back on the court Saturday afternoon at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.

Match time is set for 2pm.
