WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS POST HUGE COMEBACK WIN OVER GUELPH

Box Score Coming off a strong effort, but ultimately falling short in four sets, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team was back on the court Saturday afternoon.

Hosting the Guelph Gryphons for the second time this weekend, the Lakers were looking to come away with a split of their two-match series.

While it didn’t look good for much of the match, the Lakers showed a ton of heart, fighting back from down 2-0 to come all the way back and win 3-2 in five thrilling sets.

Nipissing jumped out to an early lead, grabbing an 8-6 advantage.

The Gryphons pushed back towards the middle of the set and the teams found themselves tied up 15-15, as they both looked to take control of the opening game.

Down, but not out, the Lakers fought back to pull within one, 24-23 and extended the first set, climbing back into it, but eventually falling 30-28.

It was a slow start for the Lakers in the second set, as they trailed 7-2 early on.

They put together a strong run, outscoring Guelph 7-4 to climb back into the set, down just 11-9.

The Gryphons built on their lead, pushing the advantage to 16-11 and eventually taking the win, 25-15 to go up 2-0 in the match.

Nipissing came out strong in the third set, building a quick 11-10 lead, before jumping ahead by two, 15-13 at the midway point of the game.

Despite seeing their lead dwindle, the Lakers kept their composure and grabbed a 22-20 lead late in the set, holding on to win 25-22 and keep the match alive, trailing 2-1.

Nipissing continued to roll in the fourth set, scoring early and often to grab a cushion.

They led 18-13 midway through the set and continued to stay out in front of Guelph, up 21-17 late, looking to extend the match.

Nipissing made no mistake pushing the match to a fifth set, winning 25-18.

In the fifth, down 3-0, the Lakers stormed back with four straight points, going up 4-3.

The Lakers continued to roll, leading 8-6.

From there, they locked things down and picked up a 15-10 win to take the fifth set and the match.

Paige Owen had 24 kills to lead the Lakers offence, while Oceane Raymond-Leduc added 15 and Logan Garvey had 42 assists in the victory.

The Lakers remain at home, hosting the RMC Paladins next weekend in their final regular season home games of the season.
