Coming off an important and thrilling five set win Friday night, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team was hoping to make it two in a row Saturday.
For the second straight day, the Lakers hosted the Windsor Lancers as the teams closed out their weekend series.
In another even and competitive matchup, the Lancers came out on top, winning 3-0 to salvage their weekend in North Bay, as both teams settled for the weekend split.
A slow start hurt the Lakers in the first set, as they trailed 5-1 and 8-2 early on.
They fought back and tied things up 16-16, pushing the Lancers late in the set.
Down 22-20, Nipissing once again fought back to tie things up, but the Lancers snuck out a 27-25 win to go up 1-0 in the match.
In the second, it was a much better start for the Lakers, as they trailed by just one early on, down 8-7.
They battled back and took a late lead, up 20-19, but the Lancers stormed back, outscoring Nipissing 5-1 to close out the set, winning 25-20.
In the third and what turned out to be the final set, Windsor grabbed an early lead for the third straight game.
After going down 6-3, the Lakers fought back, but still trailed 13-10 midway through the set.
Trading points down the stretch, the Lancers kept the Lakers at bay and claimed the third set 25-19 to take the match in three straight sets.
The Lakers remain at home, hosting the Toronto Varsity Blues next weekend for a pair of matches.
