Box Score After a weekend split at home against the Windsor Lancers and playing some solid volleyball, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team was back in action Friday night.
The Lakers hosted the Toronto Varsity Blues in the first of a pair of matches at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
A slow start hurt the Lakers and despite a battle late in the match, Nipissing dropped the contest 3-0 to the Blues.
Toronto jumped out to an early lead, going up 7-2 quickly to begin the opening set.
They controlled the first set, leading 16-9 midway through the set as they kept the Lakers on their heels for most of the game.
In the end, they came away with a 25-14 win to go up 1-0.
The Lakers got off to a much better start in the second set, down 6-4 early, but storming back to take a 14-12 lead midway through the set.
Both teams made runs to take the lead and they found themselves tied 20-20 late in the set.
After a 3-0 run by the blues to go up 23-20, the Lakers fought back, going on their own 3-1 run, as they climbed back into the set late, but still trailed 24-23.
Toronto put the game away, however, scoring the next point to claim the win.
With the Blues up 2-0 and heading into the third set, the Lakers continued to fight to stay alive.
The Blues got out to a 6-3 lead, but the Lakers once again poured it on after an early deficit, going up 15-12 midway through the game.
The teams then found themselves all tied up, even at 18-18 as they approached the final points of the set.
Toronto went on a 7-1 run after the tie, grabbing late control and the victory in the set.
The strong finish gave the blues a straight sets victory.
Paige Owen had five kills, Kristine Ledger and Amy Connelly each added four in the contest.
The teams wrap up the weekend Saturday afternoon.
Match time is set for 4pm.
