WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS EARN IMPRESSIVE WIN TO BEGIN THE YEAR

Box Score The Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team had to wait a little longer to get their season going after early season byes, but they finally hit the court Friday night.

The Lakers hosted the Waterloo Warriors in their first of a pair of matches up this weekend, as the same teams will hit the court Saturday afternoon as well.

Nipissing made it worth the wait to get started, as they came out flying and picked up a 3-1 win in their opening match.

Nipissing started off strong, jumping out to an early 11-5 lead and that’s when they took over.

A 9-5 run put them up 20-10 late in the set as they cruised to a 25-16 win to take the opening game and go up 1-0.

It was another strong set for the Lakers, as they carried momentum over from the opening game despite a slower start.

After trailing 9-8 early on, they took control after outscoring Waterloo 10-7 midway through and picked up a 25-18 win.

Waterloo refused to go away, however, winning the third set to extend the match.

They grabbed an early 14-11 lead, extended it to 21-15 late on and picked up a 25-18 win to get back in the match and force a fourth set.

That was as close as they would get, as Nipissing locked things down and claimed the fourth set.

In a back and forth game – for the most part – the Lakers outlasted the Warriors 25-21 to earn the win and the match.

Paige Owen led the Lakers attack with 16 kills, Amy Connelly added 10 and Oceane Raymond-Leduc had eight in the victory.

The Lakers and Warriors wrap up their weekend set Saturday.

Match time is set for 4pm at the Robert J. Surtees Athletic Centre.
