WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: LAKERS COME UP JUST SHORT IN A FIVE-SET THRILLER

Entering the final match of the weekend having won three matches in a row, the Nipissing Lakers women’s volleyball team was looking to finish the weekend in style.

For the second time in as many days, the Lakers hosted the Western Mustangs after Nipissing earned a 3-1 win Friday night.

Another thrilled saw the Lakers come up just short, falling 3-2 to the Mustangs to finish the weekend with a split.

The Lakers started strong and jumped out to a 14-10 lead midway through the first set.

Nipissing kept a healthy lead as the set progress, leading 23-18 before putting the game away and going up 1-0 thanks to a 25-20 win.

Western responded in the second and elevated their play starting things off up 5-2 in the early stages of the game.

Nipissing took the lead, 15-14, midway through, but the Mustangs answered and regained a late lead.

After leading 21-19, Western topped the Lakers 25-22 to even the match, 1-1.

The third set was some of the best volleyball played in the two matches this weekend as both teams left it all on the court.

Down early, the Lakers fought back to turn an 11-8 deficit into a 13-13 tie before grabbing a late 19-18 lead.

Western replied, closing the gap before Nipissing came up clutch with the final few points, earning a 28-26 win to go up 2-1 in the match.

The Mustangs refused to go away in the fourth and came out well as they looked to push the match to five sets.

After leading 7-6 early, the Lakers trailed 17-15 midway through the set and were unable to recover, falling 25-16.

In the fifth set, Western got the jump on Nipissing and led 5-2 early on.

The Mustangs were able to stay ahead of the Lakers throughout the entire set, eventually claiming the 15-10 to take the match.

Paige Owen led the Lakers with 17 kills, Anna Marie Horvat had 11 and Oceane Raymond-Leduc added 10 in the contest.

Logan Garvey capped off her outstanding weekend with 42 assists.

Nipissing has wrapped up their play in the first semester and will be back on the court in January when they host the Guelph Gryphons.
