Windsor sweeps Warriors to open 2022-23 season

The Lancer men’s volleyball team opened up the 2022-23 season with a weekend sweep of the visiting Waterloo Warriors at the Toldo Lancer Centre.

Windsor defeated the Warriors 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-15) on Friday and 3-1 (25-9, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20).

FRIDAY
The first set was a tightly contested contest between the two OUA west division opponents. No team broke free from the other and the set went into extra points, with the Lancers coming out on top 26-24.

The second set was another nail-biter until the end when a number of service and attack errors helped the Lancers pull away from the Warriors to earn the win, 25-21.

The blue and gold came alive in the third, dominating the frame. With the score tied 4-4 early on, Windsor took control of the court and ran with it to a 25-15 win and a 3-0 set sweep to secure the win.

Luca Nastase, Stephen Kary and Chase Bridges-Hunter all had a team high six kills, while new Lancer Zach Albert had a game high 6 service aces. Anthony DeGirolamo had a game high 23 assists in the victory.

SATURDAY
Windsor’s winning ways continued in game two of the double-header as the blue and gold came out on fire Saturday afternoon, dominating the first set for a quick 25-9 win.

Despite being dominated in the first set, the Warriors did not give up and came back fighting in the second. The visitors took an early led in the set and didn’t look back as they tied the game with a 25-22 set victory.

Looking to get back on top, the Lancers pulled out all the stops in the third set. Five straight points midway through the frame made the difference as the Lancers went up two game s to one with a convincing 25-15 win.

Waterloo won the first few points of the fourth set, but the Lancers were having none of it. Four kills helped the blue and gold build a quick 10-4 lead. The Warriors tried to make it interesting late in the set, but the Lancers were too far ahead for it to make any difference. Windsor earned the weekend sweep with a 25-20 fourth set victory.

Albert had another outstanding game for the home team with a game high 11 kills and five aces. Nastase also had 11 kills and three blocks in the victory, while DeGirolamo once again led the game with 29 assists.
