Windsor sweeps Gryphons in second straight game

The Windsor Lancer men’s volleyball team were back in action on Saturday to take on the Guelph Gryphons once again at the Toldo Lancer Centre for the second time this weekend.

The Lancers were able to take care of business for the second time in a 24-hour period winning 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 25-16) and wrapping up a flawless 6-0 sets won weekend over the visiting Gryphons.

The victory from Saturday’s showdown now improves the Lancers season record to 11-4 on the campaign and moves them up a rank to currently second place overall in the OUA Standings.

STATS
Noah Koskie led the way for the Windsor Lancers offensively with 10 kills and had a monster game from the service line dishing out 4 service aces against the Gryphons serve receive.

Gustavo Siqueira also had another solid all-around game for the blue and gold as the Brazilian import notched 10 kills and dished out 4 assists in addition to digging up 7 balls defensively.

Meanwhile, Anthony DeGirolamo had another impressive performance with 3 blocks, 8 digs, and 31 assists leading his team in the digs and assists columns.

Luca Nastase and Anthony Ivanovski also contributed as well to the blue and gold’s second sweeping victory on the weekend with 2 service aces each in addition to their great stats produced in the outing.

Guelph was equally led by Arjun Selhi and Jacob Schweyer offensively who each had 6 kills however, it was not enough to get a win in Windsor this time around for the Gryphons.

GAME FLOW
The first set was intensely fought between both teams which saw points traded early on until the Lancers found themselves trailing the Gryphons 15-12.  With the set not too far out of reach for the blue and gold, they were able to overcome the adversity faced to tie things up yet again at 17-17 and enter a fight to the finish.

Guelph earned two set possible point opportunities to close out the set but could not finish as the Lancers resiliently fought back and flipped the script at 26-25 and a Guelph attack error on the next play resulted in Windsor snagging the first set 27-25 with extra points needed to go up 1-0 in the contest.
The second set was all Windsor’s to win as the Lancers piled up a mountain of points making it extremely difficult for Guelph to respond in the second set and they comfortably cruised to a 25-14 victory to go up 2-0 in the match and once again found themselves on the verge of sweeping the Gryphons for a second straight night.

The third set proved that to be true as the blue and gold tirelessly put the pressure on Guelph but to their credit the Gryphons managed to continue battling closely making it a tougher task than what was anticipated by the Lancers throughout.   That is until Windsor was able to break open a 11-6 lead that they never forfeited after that as they sailed into the later stages of the set with a big cushion lead intact.

In the end, the Lancers were able to close out with a 25-16 third set win and 3-0 match victory over the Gryphons for a second straight match to finish off the weekend 2-0.
