The Western Mustangs come into this game against the Brock Badgers after a 3-1 loss yesterday. They looked to secure the win today but after winning the first two sets, the Brock Badgers went on to take the next three and the game win 3-2.
Brock takes the opening point in the first set but a wide serve from Brock gives Western their first points on the board. Western push ahead in the points early in the first set getting a two-point lead after a kill from Kendall Homenick. Brock put more points on the board but Western maintain a point lead. The teams go on to equalize points at 9. A long serve from Brock puts Western back in the lead, however. A timeout is called when the Mustangs push ahead by three points with 12-9 on the scoreboard. Western go on to extend their lead to five points after Brock sends a ball out of bounds. That lead is quickly brought back to four as KJ Robinson from the Badgers sends a ball into the middle of the court. A double block from Cade Smith and Kendall Homenick puts the point lead back at five after the Badgers are unable to get the ball through the block. Jonah Millard gets a kill which puts the Mustangs within five points of the first set win. As the Mustangs get within three points of the set win, it forces the Badgers into a timeout. Owen Kelly sets a ball for Blake Fenwick which brings the Mustangs within one of the first set win. Cade Smith wins the first set for Western as a ball goes off the Brock block and out of bounds. The final score for the first set is 25-19.
Western takes the opening point of the second set, but a ball is sent out of bounds by Western, putting Brock on the scoreboard. Blake Fenwick gets a service ace, putting the Mustangs ahead in the points. A few points later, Blake Fenwick sends a ball right into the Brock block where it goes out of bounds off the Badgers’ hands which puts the Mustangs four points ahead in the set. Western increase the point lead to five, causing a timeout called by Brock. Brock win the first point coming out of the timeout but a long serve from Brock gives the point back to Western. A service ace from Blake Fenwick causes Brock to call for a timeout as the score sits at 15-9 to the Mustangs. Amit Sayal serves with six points to the second set win. Jonah Millard gets a block to put the Mustangs five away from the set win. The Mustangs continue to push towards the second set win. The Badgers send a ball out of bounds to give the Mustangs the second set win with a score of 25-19.
Western win the opening point of the third set, increasing that point lead to two early on. The teams equalize at three and Brock push ahead by one in the points but a short serve from Brock equalizes the points again at four. However, Brock is able to push ahead in the points again after a service ace and a further kill. When Brock extends the point lead to four, Western call for a timeout. Brock wins the first point coming out of the timeout. Brock maintain the point lead in the next few points with Western working to close the point gap towards the middle of this set. Brock tips the ball over the net to get the ball through the triple block which brings them within five points of the third set win. The Badgers continue to push ahead in the points. A block from Brock puts the Badgers within one point of the set win. A further block from Jonah Millard puts another point on the board for the Mustangs. A kill that falls in the far end of the court secures the third set for the Badgers with a final score of 25-15.
Brock takes the opening point of the fourth set, going on to take a point lead early into the fourth set. A block from Brock goes out of bounds, adding a point to the board for the Mustangs. A kill from Brock goes off the hands of the Mustangs to put the score at 7-4 to the Badgers. A long serve from Brock decreases that point lead to two. The teams equalize at nine but a short serve from Western puts Brock ahead again. Cade Smith tips the ball over the net to add another point for the Mustangs. The score sits at 11-10 to Brock. A kill goes wide for Brock, equalizing the teams at 11. When the Badgers push ahead by four points again, a timeout is called. Brock maintains their point lead, coming within five points of the set win and threatening to push the game into a fifth set. A ball tipped over the net by Blake Fenwick closes the point gap to three. A ball is sent out of bounds by the Badgers and Brock calls for a timeout as the Mustangs gain momentum in the final few moments of the fourth set. Brock pushes the game into a fifth set with a final score of 25-21.
Kendall Homenick and Blake Fenwick get a block to secure Western the first point of the fifth set. Despite Brock equalizing at two, the Mustangs push ahead by one. Amit Sayal increases that point lead to two after Brock are unable to save the ball. Brock then go on to score six consecutive points putting the score at 8-4 to Brock. The teams switch sides and Western stops Brock’s point streak as Amit Sayal sends a ball over the net which goes out of bounds off the hands of Brock. Western closes the point gap to three as Brock sends another ball out of bounds. Brock pushes ahead in the points however, and Western call a timeout when the score hits 11-6 to Brock. Coming out of the timeout, the Badgers push towards the set win and a kill secures the win for Brock. The final score of the set is 15-10 to Brock.
The Mustangs will meet with the Windsor Lancers on February 2nd at 8:00pm.
