Wesmen Get Offence Back On Track, Move Into First Place

The Winnipeg Wesmen forgot about a fault-filled Friday and instead had reason to celebrate on Saturday.

Nigel Nielsen led three players in double figures in kills and the Wesmen men’s volleyball team won for the third time in four matches with a 3-1 (25-18, 25-16, 15-25, 25-16) victory over the Manitoba Bisons in a Canada West conference match at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. 

Nielsen had 14 kills, two stuff blocks and a block assist in leading the Wesmen to their fifth conference win in eight outings and into sole possession of first place in the East Division. The Wesmen are a match up on 4-4 Manitoba and Brandon. 

Eric Dornez hit a career-high .409 and had 13 kills and seven digs for Winnipeg, which also got 13 kills, eight digs and two aces from Daniel Thiessen

The Wesmen held the Bisons to .102 attacking on the night, including -.087 in the fourth set. 

The Wesmen hit .246 on the night including 407 in the first and .471 in the decisive fourth. They managed 39 digs and 15 total blocks.

Libero Darian Picklyk had a match-high 12 digs and setter Matt Klysh recorded his first career game with multiple aces, scoring three. He added 41 assists.

Ben Carleton’s eight kills led the Bisons, but the left side committed nine errors and hit .-042.
