Walker-de Jong and Mills Named McMaster Athletes of the Week

HAMILTON, Ont. – Shaunna Walker-de Jong of the Marauders women’s swim team and Brendan Mills of the McMaster men’s volleyball team take home this week’s McMaster Athlete of the Week honours.

Women’s Swimming – Shaunna Walker-de Jong

A new member of the McMaster swim team but a veteran on the OUA scene, Shaunna Walker-de Jong has made huge contributions to the Marauders team this season. At the U SPORTS Championships last weekend in Montreal, Walker-de Jong had an incredible performance in the women’s 50m Free, earning herself a national bronze medal (26.44). Walker-de Jong placed sixth in the 50m Free last month at the OUA Championships. She truly brought a newfound caliper of performance and composure when it mattered most to earn McMaster’s sole medal at the national meet.

Men’s Volleyball – Brendan Mills

Playing in his third year of eligibility, Brendan Mills has been a force to reckon with on offense for the men’s volleyball team. The outside hitter was named the player of the game for the OUA final, where the Marauders raised the Forsyth Cup for the third year in a row. Mills was a key piece of McMaster’s offense on Friday night with 18 kills, one service ace, and two block assists. He will bring his previous experience competing at the national level into this upcoming weekend, as the Marauders compete in the U SPORTS Championships hosted by the Queen’s Gaels.
