Torres drafted to top Philippines professional team

Former Brock Badgers women’s volleyball player Aleiah Torres (BSc ’24) is now a professional volleyball player.

Torres was drafted 12th overall by the Creamline Cool Smashers in the first round of the inaugural Premier Volleyball League (PVL) draft on Monday, July 8.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to play professional volleyball, so I’m extremely blessed and grateful for this opportunity,” Torres said.

The Toronto product is of Filipino heritage and will be playing in the PVL: the top professional women’s volleyball league in the Philippines.

“Being able to play in the Philippines is also special because of all the family I have there and the beautiful culture I get to be surrounded by,” she added.

During her four seasons as a Brock Badger, Torres was a key member of the defence as the starting libero. She appeared in 72 regular season matches and 14 playoff contests.

“I’m happy for Aleiah. From Day 1, she made it clear she wanted to play pro in the Philippines,” said head coach Steve Delaney. “I think it’s important to recognize she went after exactly what she wanted.”

In each season, the Medical Sciences graduate led the team in total digs and digs per set. During both the 2021-22 and 2022-23 campaigns, Torres finished second in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference in total digs and digs per set.

Torres was named an OUA First Team All-Star in 2022-23 where she delivered a career-high 295 total digs and 4.21 digs per set. She was also awarded a spot on the OUA All-Rookie Team in 2019-20 in her first year as a Badger.

“We’re super proud of her and we know Aleiah is going to represent Brock University well,” Delaney added.

The Creamline Cool Smashers have won three consecutive PVL titles and have the most championships of any franchise in league history.

Last season, the Creamline Cool Smashers finished fourth overall in the regular season before going on a spectacular playoff run, defeating the Choco Mucho Flying Titans in the final two matches by scores of 3-1 and 3-2.
