Tigers sweep Sea-Hawks

St. John’s, NL – The Dalhousie Tigers defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks in three sets 25-9, 25-20, 25-9 at the fieldhouse on Friday, November 17, 2023.

The game’s first point went to the Tigers on a block from #19 Amelia Hartnett. A kill from Taylar Johnston scored the Sea-Hawk’s only point during a 5-1 run for the Tigers in the early stages of the first set to set the score at 7-3. The Sea-Hawks fought back with their own run highlighted by a kill from Karen Greek, but still found themselves trailing 11-6 before calling a timeout. The Tigers continued their dominance after the timeout, forcing the Sea-Hawks into another attempt to regroup after two misplaced kills, and Talia Vydykhan recorded a kill and block to make the score 15-6. The Sea-Hawks ended the Tigers 8-0 run in the middle of the set with a kill from Karen Greek, but were unable to put their own commanding run together. The first set finished with a kill from Paris Stewart to finish off the Tigers’ 5-0 run to win the set 25-9.

The second set started with a misplaced kill by the Sea-Hawks after a great dig kept the rally alive. The Sea-Hawks called an early timeout in the set to try and settle down after multiple misplays gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead. The Tiger’s dominance continued in the second set as they took a 9-4 lead with kills from Stewart and Amelia Hartnett. A great defensive rally display from the Sea-Hawks scored them a point, followed by a service ace from Adria Butt and a block from Taylar Johnston helped the Sea-Hawks tie the set 11-11. Maria Moores scored a thumping kill that the Tigers could not return to keep the Sea-Hawks in the set. A similar kill from #14 Grace Calnan gave the Tigers a 17-14 lead and forced the Sea-Hawks into another timeout. Another powerful kill from  Moores after the timeout and a twisting kill from Greek gave the Sea-Hawks momentum which led to a Tigers timeout with the score level 19-19. The Tigers roared out of the timeout to go on a 6-1 run and finished with a kill from Stewart to win the set 25-20.

A Sea-Hawks error gave the Tigers the first point of the set but was followed up by a kill from Johnston for Memorial. The Sea-Hawks called another timeout as the Tigers scored four unanswered to take a 5-1 lead. More offensive errors from the Sea-Hawks furthered the Tiger’s lead before a service error ended their 6-0 run. Kills from Courtney Hodder and Halle Wirth gave the Sea-Hawks two points but struggled to keep the Tigers off the board. The Tigers forced a Memorial timeout with a 12-5 lead. A kill from Melissa Hatfield and back-to-back kills from Hartnett extended the Tiger’s lead to 16-5. Dalhousie extended their lead with kills from Kyla Chubb and Kasandra Trenke to take a commanding 11-point lead at 19-8. The Sea-Hawks battled hard through the end of the set with a great dig from Moores but fell to the Tigers 25-9.

The Seahawks take on the Acadia Axe-Women next weekend on Friday, November 24 in a two game series. The game will start at 7:00 PM AST and can be watched online on AUSTV
