Tigers survive 5-set marathon against Axewomen

The Dalhousie Tigers (7-1) handed the Acadia Axewomen their first loss of the season, by a score of 3-2 (25-21, 18-25, 26-28, 25-19, 15-13), in a drama filled match at the MUN Fieldhouse.

The Tigers were able to surge late in the opening set and grabbed the early lead with a 25-21 victory in the opening set. The following set was dominated from start to finish by the Axewomen, they would eventually take it 25-18.

With the two teams deadlocked at one set a piece, they battled in an electric 3rd set which was a microcosm of the marathon match. With the score knotted up at 26, Acadia’s Taylor Witty (Dartmouth, NS) was able to direct it through the block of Lucy Glen-Carter (Toronto, ON) for the point, eventually escaping from the set 28-26. However, the Tigers were not deterred, surging back from an early deficit in the 4th set to take it 25-19, setting up a decisive 5th and final set. Acadia would take a 10-8 lead in the final set but the Tigers helped by a few crucial points by Glen-Carter were able to take match with a 15-13 win in the 5th set.

Glen-Carter was once again the catalyst for the Tigers attack, closing the game with an impressive 26 kills that led all players in the match. Glen-Carter was also active on the defensive end, grabbing 15 digs for her team’s cause. Tigers’ setter Brett Boldon (Fredericton, NB) was efficient in her distribution of the ball, tacking on 40 assists.

Acadia’s Sydney Zakutney (Ottawa, ON) led her team in kills (22) and digs (24), consistently being involved in the play regardless of where she was positioned on the court. Eve Collombin (Victoria, BC) had some nice attacks for the Axewomen, putting up a solid total of 16 kills on the afternoon.

Talia Vydykhan (Hammonds Plains, NS) had 12 kills and 8 digs to earn herself Subway player of the game honours. 

The Tigers return to the court on Sunday morning at 10:30am AT versus the hosts, the Memorial Seahawks. Acadia hit the court right after at 12:30pm AT to battle the Moncton Aigles Bleues.
