The UBC Thunderbirds (9-7) are gearing up for the first round of the Canada West playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the West division, with Week 1 of their postseason taking place in Edmonton, Alberta from March 3rd-5th.
With the new round robin tournament format, the ‘Birds will face the East division’s No. 3 Winnipeg Wesmen (6-10) to open Pool B play on Thursday, March 3rd, at 12:00 p.m. (PT).
On Friday, the ‘Birds take on the East’s fifth place University of Regina Cougars (5-11) at 12:00 p.m. (PT) before squaring off against the host and Central division’s No. 1-seeded Alberta Pandas (16-2) on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. (PT).
UBC split their last two series of the regular season and finished two games above .500, with Claire Cossarini amongst the top five in the Canada West in hitting percentage (.306) and blocks per set (0.92). The ‘Birds also led the conference with 142 service aces (as Emma Doyon racked up a team-high 19 aces in just 30 sets) and 219 block assists.
All the playoff action from Week 1 will stream live on Canada West TV, with the top two teams from each of the three pools advancing to Week 2.
