KAMLOOPS – The visiting Trinity Western Spartans powered their way past the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women’s volleyball team on Friday night to pick up a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-16) victory.
The WolfPack kept pace with the Spartans throughout the early stages of all three sets but were unable to match a Trinity Western squad that made just five attack errors all night while also racking up eight service aces.
Brooklyn Olfert and Seray Altay led the ‘Pack with eight and five kills respectively with Olfert also adding a pair of aces. Hadley Schmidt racked up 17 assists and six digs while Kate Lamothe was a presence in the middle of the WolfPack defence with a pair of block assists.
Savannah Purdy had a game-high nine kills for the Spartans but Mikayla Benterud stole the show with seven kills on ten swings. Olivia Heinen had 23 assists and a pair of service aces in the winning effort.
Olfert paced the WolfPack with three kills in the first set while Siobhan Toal, Schmidt and Altay all added a pair. TRU held the Spartans to hitting just .269 per cent in the set but a pair of TWU service aces and five attack errors from the ‘Pack saw the visitors jump out to the 1-0 lead with a 25-16 victory.
The Spartan attack was dominant in the second set as the visitors hit .533 per cent as a team. Olfert had a trio of kills for the ‘Pack but an 8-0 Spartan run that saw them stretch what was a 9-8 lead all the way to 17-8 allowed them to run away with the 25-14 win.
It was mor of the same in the third set as an Altay kill made things tight at 11-10 in favour of the Spartans before Trinity Western went on a 9-4 run that gave them a firm grasp on the set that they wouldn’t surrender.
The WolfPack will get another shot to knock off the division leading Spartans tomorrow at 3:45 p.m. inside the TCC.
