SPARTANS RESPOND TO EARN WEEKEND SPLIT

LANGLEY, British Columbia – After a disappointing 3-1 loss to the No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night the No. 6 Trinity Western Spartans came back strong to earn a weekend split with a 3-0 sweep Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The 26-24, 25-16, 25-22 win moves the Spartans back to .500 at 5-5, while the loss drops the Huskies to 6-4 in Canada West play.

Fourth-year outside Henry Rempel (Swift Current, Sask.) was dominant finishing with 20 kills, while hitting at .690, without an error for the Spartans, while third-year outside Aaron Elser (Calgary, Alta.) added 10 kills, and three blocks to lead TWU. Isaiah Mamer with 10 kills, and four blocks, and Emmett Graham with 10 kills led the Huskies.

TWU third-year setter Anselm Rein (Erfurt, Germany) finished the night with 38 assists, while Saskatchewan’s Noah Opseth finished with 29.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Adam Schriemer
“”The biggest thing tonight was how much better we were offensively. I thought (Anselm) was better and he did a better job of being on schedule – being on time and on target. Then, I think with serving and block defence, it was pretty similar. When we had our opportunities to score, we executed and when we didn’t have those more efficient opportunities, we just did a better job of extending rallies.”

“The takeaway from the weekend is the same as we’ve said before. Our high-end is there, but we need to upgrade our low-end. It’s something we’re still working towards. After a tough loss like we had on Friday, when we’re still trying to learn how to play together, we look to our seniors and our leaders, Henry was incredible today and he had one of the better games of his career.”

NOTABLE

  • The Spartans finished the night hitting an impressive .461 (46-11-76), while the Huskies finished at .125 (30-20- 80).
  • TWU had a 9 to 8.5 edge in blocks, and a 21-18 edge in digs.
  • The Huskies had two service aces to zero for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans are 41-20 lifetime against the Huskies.
