KAMLOOPS – The No. 1 ranked Trinity Western Spartans took care of business on home court Friday night, defeating the Thompson Rivers WolfPack women’s volleyball team 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-20) in Langley.
The Spartans were more efficient on the night, hitting .362 per cent as a team to TRU’s .160. The WolfPack more than held their own at the service line, finishing with six aces from six different players in the match.
Brooklyn Olfert put down seven kills to lead TRU followed closely by rookie Addison Witkowski who tallied six kills on her 12 attempts. Witkowski was also solid defensively with three block assists on the night.
Savannah Purdy had a game-high 12 kills for Trinity Western while also tallying three service aces. Kaylee Plouffe added nine kills for the Spartans.
The WolfPack kept things close in the first set.
Back-to-back kills from Erin Mutch saw Trinity leading just 20-19 before the hosts rallied. Plouffe put down the last three kills in the set to lead the Spartans to the 25-22 victory.
After Trinity handily took the second, the third set was once again a battle.
After finding themselves in a 21-15 hole, the ‘Pack got a kill from Hayley McNaught, a kill and a block assist from Witkowski as well as a block assist and a service ace from fellow rookie Lucy Millam to make things close. It was a case of too-little-too late however as the Spartans were able to fend off the comeback for the set and match victory.
These teams will do battle again tomorrow night in Langley in a game scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
