VANCOUVER – Cory Schoenherr (Waterloo, Ont.) was a perfect nine for nine on the attack and added four aces and three blocks, as the Spartans middle helped lead Trinity Western to a 3-1 (24-21, 20-25, 25-23, 30-28) win over UBC to open the Blue Team Cup Thursday at War Memorial Gym.
John Obi (Winnipeg) and Piers de Greeff (Victoria, B.C.) added nine kills apiece as well for the visiting Spartans, while Anselm Rein (Erfurt, Germany) had 34 assists and three kills.
The Spartans are now 2-0 in preseason, having opened their preseason schedule with a four-set win over UFV.

Adam Schriemer, TWU Head Coach
“It was an interesting game. Going into preseason games, you’re always curious to see our level while at the same time, the opponent is a bit of an unknown. With not expecting a lot from an early preseason game like this, I thought the level was a little bit higher than I had anticipated. I thought our block defence looked as good as it has all training camp and preseason. I thought our defensive intensity was great. We created a lot of chances and Tayler (Roxburgh, Langley, B.C.) was really effective being a playmaking libero. I’m really happy with how we created swings. I think the upgrade for the next matches in the Blue Team Cup is executing on a couple of those chances that we created. I’m really happy with Cory Schoenherr. All summer he was telling me how excited he was to be back here and playing with the Spartans and for him to hit perfect and have such an efficient night is really great to see.
“The Blue Team Cup is a tough tournament and we’ll have our hands full over the next two days, but we’re looking forward to it.”
