SPARTANS BEAT RMC TO OPEN KINGSTON TOUR

KINGSTON, Ont. – Playing their first of four games in four days, Trinity Western beat Royal Military College of Canada 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-18) at SAM Gym Thursday.

The Spartans will remain in Kingston through the weekend, with three matches in the Smola Cup, including dates with McMaster (Oct. 13), Sherbrooke (Oct. 14) and Queen’s (Oct. 15). The Spartans played both McMaster and Sherbrooke in last year’s national championship run, beating the Marauders in the semifinal and the Vert et Or in the final. TWU last played Queen’s on Oct. 5, 2019, with the Spartans winning in three sets.

The six-team Smola Cup also features Alberta and Mount Royal, with the three Canada West schools facing each of the three Ontario schools. The five out-of-town teams were the top five teams in the final U SPORTS Top 10 regular season rankings last year.

The 2023 U SPORTS Championship will be at Queen’s University this year Mar. 14-17.

QUOTABLE
Adam Schriemer – TWU Head Coach
“It’s an honour to play against Royal Military College. Before the game, we talked about our how our opponent tonight are students who are studying and training to protect and defend our country, so sharing the court tonight with them was a privilege. We made sure we wanted to acknowledge that. As far as the volleyball game, I thought we did some really good things in some phases but then we had some pretty inconsistent play in those same phases as well. I thought we were pretty up and down offensively and that stems from our first contact, our second contact and our third contact as well. So the frustrating thing is that it wasn’t one specific thing we need to get better at, but it was inconsistency in all areas. Overall, it was a good first match of our tour and it was a privilege to play against RMC.”

UP NEXT
TWU will take on McMaster Friday at 7 p.m. (PT) in the Spartans first match of the Smola Cup at Queen’s University.
