Rolland and Poiré named McGill athletes of the week

MONTREAL – Victor Rolland, a native of Lyon, France, and Clara Poiré of Blainville, Que., are the McGill University athletes of the week for the period ending Oct. 29, 2023.

Rolland, a 24-year-old master’s student in mechanical engineering, won silver and bronze medals while guiding the McGill crew to a fifth-place finish of 14 universities at the OUA rowing championship in St. Catharines, Ont., last Saturday. The 5-foot-9, 160-pound senior was second in the men’s lightweight single, completing the two-kilometre race in eight minutes, 3.89 seconds. More remarkably, he also competed in the heavyweight eight, helping the boat post a bronze medal finish in 6:16.89. A captain and team president of the McGill rowing club’s executive committee, Rolland first enrolled at the University in 2017, and has merited numerous academic awards, including a spot on the Principal’s Student-athlete Honour Roll.

Poiré, a 6-foot-2, right-side hitter on the women’s volleyball team, played a key role in guiding McGill to victories over Ottawa (3-0) and Montreal (3-2) last weekend. Over her eight sets played during the weekend, the 24-year-old senior scored 27.5 points, on the strength of 20 kills, one service ace and 6.5 stuff blocks. She added 18 digs and one assist on defence. A product of College Lionel-Groulx, Poiré enrolled at McGill in 2019 and completed an education degree in kinesiology last year and has returned to work on a graduate certificate in accounting.
