Burlington, Ont. – Ellen Ougrinov and Sara Rohr have been named OUA athletes of the week, fueled by Milk2Go Sport, for the period ending January 21, 2024.
Ellen Ougrinov, Basketball, Toronto Varsity Blues
Starting a weekend at home in support of the annual ‘Shoot for the Cure’ campaign, Ellen Ougrinov and the Toronto Varsity Blues left it all on the court.
Despite a slow start on the court for both teams, the Varsity Blues defence, led by Ougrinov, made all the difference in the first half. With 10 rebounds on the night, Ougrinov was one of the key defensive leaders, helping the Varsity Blues establish their lead against the Ridgebacks. Carrying the momentum into the second half with a 20-plus point lead, the fifth-year guard was instrumental in securing the eventual win. With a 27-point effort, which included seven successful three-pointers, Ougrinov also added four assists and three steals to her stat line.
Headed back to Goldring Centre, the Blues next faced off with the nationally ranked Queen’s Gaels. Battling hard in the first quarter, the Varsity Blues kept close to the Gaels, trailing by five points, while later outscoring the Gaels in both the third and fourth quarters, and once again, it was the veteran Ougrinov who helped keep it close all game. Falling just short to the Queen’s squad, the teaching major scored 25 points to go along with four rebounds, five assists, and one steal.
Ougrinov has now registered 20 or more points in four consecutive games, and 10 in total this season. She also ranks first in the OUA in three-point field goals, fourth in three-point percentage, and fifth among scoring leaders (17.9 PPG).
Sara Rohr, Volleyball, Brock Badgers
Taking a trip close to the border, the Brock Badgers headed to Windsor, with setter Sara Rohr helping lead the Badgers to a pair of wins.
Brock started the night strong in Windsor, confidently taking the first two sets, before the Lancers pushed them to a decisive fifth set. All match long, however, Rohr had the Badgers offence rolling, dishing out butter for her team with 53 assists on the night en route to the five-set victory. Adding to her tally, Rohr also chipped in with an additional three aces, seven digs, 1.5 blocks, and a kill to end the night with five and a half points for her St. Catharines squad.
Heading back for a rematch on night two, the Badgers went straight to business against the Lancers. Following up her massive performance the night before, Rohr again played a major role in securing the sweep for her team. The veteran pushed the pace right from the jump, securing an early and decisive lead in the first set. While the Lancers tried to find the groove, the Milton, Ont. setter put her skills on display to create countless opportunities for her team to score in both the second and third sets, and ultimately, getting a win over the Lancers. For the match, Rohr delivered an impressive 41 assists, while also recording another ace and eight digs.
The health and physical education graduate student currently leads the province and country in assists per set with 10.59 and tops the OUA with 434 total assists.
