(HALIFAX NS) The UNB REDS bounced back from a 3-0 loss against the Dalhousie Tigers on Friday night, flipping the script on Saturday afternoon winning in straight sets.
Lydia Green led the charge with 12 kills as the REDS dominated the game, winning with scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 25-13.
In the first set, Grace Calnan (Cole Harbour, NS) kicked things off with two aces, giving the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.
Heather Benko (Sechelt, BC) responded with two kills for the Reds, propelling them to a 10-4 advantage.
As the set progressed, Green (Bedford, NS) unleashed a powerful spike, extending the Reds’ lead to 20-16.
Although Talia Vydykhan (Hammonds Plains, NS) scored a kill for the Tigers, cutting the lead to 24-21, it wasn’t enough as Benko secured the winning kill, taking the first set 25-21 for the REDS.
The second set saw a crucial kill from Heather Benko, capping off a 6-0 run by UNB, giving them a commanding 12-8 lead.
UNB continued their steady performance, with Sonya Nielsen (Delia, AB) pushing the REDS to a 22-16 lead.
While Calnan managed to reduce the lead to 24-20 for the Tigers, the set concluded with the Tigers hitting the ball out of play, resulting in a 25-20 win for the REDS in the second set.
In the third set, UNB jumped out to a 5-0 lead, thanks to two kills by Benko and a service ace from Catherine Burns (Fredericton, NB).
The Tigers tried to mount a comeback, with Annik Boldon (Fredericton, NB) narrowing the score to 10-7 early in the set.
However, UNB responded with an 8-1 run and eventually clinched the set 25-12 on an attack error from Dalhousie’s Charlotte Arsenault (Ottawa, ON).
The REDS will be back in action at home next weekend, hosting the Moncton Aigles Bleues on Sunday at UNB’s Richard J. CURRIE CENTER at 2:00 pm.
